A visit of honour: The Hellenic Presidential Guard at All Saints Grammar

This Term, All Saints Grammar had the distinct honour of welcoming the Hellenic Presidential Guard, known as the Evzones, to our campus as part of their official visit to Sydney. Their presence provided a meaningful opportunity for our school community to connect with the rich traditions and cultural heritage of Greece.

The Evzones are a prestigious ceremonial unit of the Greek Army, widely respected for their discipline, dignity, and symbolic role in representing the spirit of the Greek nation. Every aspect of their traditional dress carries deep historical significance, from the 400 pleats of the fustanella, representing 400 years of Ottoman occupation, to the red tsarouhia shoes adorned with black pom-poms.

Students and staff from Kindergarten through to Year 12 gathered in a special assembly to welcome the Guard. The ceremony was respectfully led by our School Captains, and began with a prayer from Father Dimitrios. The Evzones’ Lieutenant, Ioannis Kontogiannis, addressed the audience, offering insights into the Guard’s role, history, and ceremonial responsibilities in Greece. He closed his address with a poignant quote from Greek poet Kostis Palamas:
“Greatness of nations is not measured by acres, but with the blood and the fire in their hearts.”

Ms Elfa Lillis, Head of School, concluded the assembly by expressing sincere thanks and pride on behalf of the school community.

The visit was marked by a sense of reverence and quiet admiration. For many of our students, the experience offered a powerful and lasting connection to the values of courage, national identity and cultural legacy. It was, without question, a memorable occasion that will remain etched in the hearts of all who attended.
